The Grand Hotel Arts Weekend Update, June 17-19, 2011
By Rick Seguin, MSU College of Arts and Letters
The College of Arts and Letters at Michigan State University is pleased to announce the second main performance in the Grand Hotel Theatre during Arts Weekend, Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter Barbara Bailey Hutchison. Barbara will perform an exclusive, one-night-only show at the Hotel on Saturday, June 18 at 9 p.m.
Barbara is originally from Detroit and launched her music career while studying art at MSU. She developed a loyal following and soon found herself being wooed by advertisers who loved her smooth yet powerful voice. In fact, you may have heard her in commercials for McDonalds, Hallmark and Heinz as well as other national advertisers.
Still, her stock in trade has been her original music and interpretations of works by other talented writers. Hard to label, her style was once described by another songwriter as “art songs.” Sounds perfect for Arts Weekend, no? In her solo shows, she alternates between guitar and piano, singing lyric-driven, melodic and often humorous songs that touch on everything from personal relationships, funny circumstances, human rights issues, art and childhood.
Though her primary focus is on shows geared toward adults, she won aGrammy in 1996 as the vocalist on an album of original lullabies by friend and producer J. Aaron Brown. That has led to many requests to perform children’s shows over the years, and she has become adept at transitioning from one type of show to another. She has appeared at the White House three times, performed in nearly all 50 states, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, and Thailand.
Barbara, true to her first love, is also a working artist whose paintings have appeared in several exhibitions. She is an instructor at an annual youth art camp in Tennessee, where she has made her home for many years, and she will incorporate some of her paintings into the performance at the Hotel. You can find more information on Barbara on her web site, www.bbhsings.com.
This announcement of Barbara Bailey Hutchison’s performance at the Grand Hotel comes on the heels of our announcement that the Friday evening performance this year will feature an original play called Arts or Crafts, written and directed by Rob Roznowski, professor of acting in the MSU College of Arts and Letters Department of Theatre. The pairing of these two performances during Arts Weekend is sure to provide guests an entertaining stay at the Grand Hotel for this the 17th year of the event and partnership between Grand Hotel and the MSU College of Arts and Letters.
Be sure to join us this year, not only for these two great shows but for the art tours and lecture that will also be part of the package.
